Winter. A period of fear, uncertainty, and the struggle for survival. But also a time of rest after a year of working on the fields, a time for looking back and contemplating, for playing in the first snow, for the message of hope that is Christmas. White rest and restlessness. One subject, various nationalities, various periods in time from the 19th century to the present day – as diverse as the language of art is, there is much that holds it together, and these many paintings from many different periods and places, and by many different artists, can communicate with one another in symbolic accord about one and the same thing.
