Pavel Brázda, Dobromil and Dobromila

This exhibition, organized in collaboration with GASK – the Gallery of the Central Bohemian Region on the 90th birthday of the still-working artist, takes a retrospective look at Brázda's work from the beginnings to the present day.

Because of the political situation between 1948 and 1989, Pavel Brázda's original art was made “underground”. He and his wife, the painter and sculptor Věra Nováková, jointly developed an initially veristic and later symbolic style that each gradually interpreted on his or her own.

Brázda's “earthbound surrealism for simple folk” functions in a manner similar to medieval biblia paupera or contemporary comic books. He gradually constructed his own fictional world based on medieval morality, whose characters have their very specific origins and who all share human and institutional relationships. Brázda turns this world into a series of allegories that reflect his positivist and above all humanist worldview.
