The exhibition, which focuses on works of art created in the period from 2000 to 2009, is the fourth exhibition of this type to look at a particular period in history. It was preceded by several other exhibitions – both at GKK and at galleries that decided to include reprise showings of our exhibition in their programs – of collection items from the 1960s, the 1970s–1980s, and the 1990s. This latest exhibition and catalogue have been organized primarily with a view to the media used by the artists at the time. Classical means of expression such as painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking retained their importance, but photography, video, and installation art began to be used to a much greater extent. Some artists from the older generations found new impulses and continued to respond vibrantly to new and contemporary developments, while others developed their existing styles. A new generation of artists emerged who, though born towards the end of the totalitarian regime, had grown up within the new conditions of a free society and had naturally integrated into the international context.
