The exhibition Between Still-Life and Landscape presents the work of graphic artist Zbyněk Hraba and painter and graphic artist (who is here showing his painted canvases) Petr Fiala – twoartists whose work, in terms of content, grows from the same roots and traditions as Czech landscape painting and, one might also say, the Symbolism of the nineteenth- and early twentieth centuries. Their art also reflects new approaches and impulses from the artists’ inner worlds, which are (as with any artist) influenced by their personal experiences and encounters with contemporary reality. As a result, their landscapes or still-lifes often possess somewhat magical or fantastical elements – both hidden beneath the surface or quite openly admitted – that encourage the viewer to not only admire their aesthetic qualities but also to look for various almost existential meanings Between Still-Life and Landscape is thus more than just an exhibition of graphics and paintings depicting still-lifes and landscapes (although it is that first of all); it is also a presentation that lets us peer into the artists’ private worlds.
