Ornament as a decorative detail can be found in all civilizations and their various epochs and stages of development and in a wide variety of artistic fields ranging from fine art and architecture all the way to textiles and printed materials. The character of a particular ornament allows us to identify the place and time of its creation. Sometimes, ornament is suppressed or even forcefully rejected; at other times, it is emphasized and accentuated. With this exhibition, I have attempted to engage in a minor survey of how contemporary artists approach ornament, in what ways they use it, and what position it holds in their work. It is very important for some artists, perhaps in part because form is once again beginning to assert itself vis-à-vis content or because form can become content. The exhibition brings together works by artists from various generations, each of whom approaches ornament from a different angle. The exhibition is far from exhaustive, however – it can only hint at the directions in which the subject might evolve.
