Ivan Komárek was born 55 years ago in Prague, where he lives and work to this day. After graduating from a secondary school of art, he studied under professor Smetana at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Komárek is by nature a figurative artist, but occasionally diverges into abstraction. He finds inspiration in unconventional materials, which he works into pictures for hanging on walls or for installing within a space. The central topic of his work is the human figure within space, male-female relationships, and the primeval creation of sparks between two poles. Komárek’s expressive figurative vocabulary and his playful depiction of the magical sensuality of everyday life make him a unique figure among Czech artists. His unshakable fascination with the body as the physical, mental, and emotional “epicenter” of human perception can be clearly seen from the very beginning of his artistic career and, even today, continues to fill his work with a constantly new energy and a yearning for fresh discoveries.
