Irena Jůzová (1965) is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, professor Aleš Veselý’s School of Monumental Art (1990-1994). In 2008, she successfully defended her doctoral thesis in fine arts and intermedia art, and was named an assistant professor by the Academy of Fine Arts.
During her studies, Jůzová received several of the academy’s studio awards, and also participated in various exhibitions. In 1997, her work Places I (interactive installation) was exhibited at the Media Art Biennale WRO 97 in Wroclaw; in 2007, this piece was acquired by the National Gallery in Prague’s Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art. Her works can also be found at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, the Gallery of Modern Art in Hradec Králové, AJG in České Budějovice, and in numerous private collections. She has also received various scholarships and has participated in numerous residencies in Europe and the United States.
In 2007, her solo projected represented the Czech Republic at the 52nd Venice Biennale of contemporary art – making her the first Czech artist to do so. Her work Collection – Series was prepared exclusively for the Czechoslovak pavilion in the Giardini di Biennale. Collection – Series became an impossible-to-miss part of the exhibition and was met with enormous media response. Her latest works look at the topic of “Spend Your Time…,” of which the installation 16599 is a part.
